Pritish Nandy Biography
He was born on January 15, 1951, in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India, into a Bengali family that didn’t follow any particular religion. He grew up in Calcutta and spent his first 28 years there, studying at La Martiniere College and briefly at Presidency College.
He was a Rajya Sabha member elected by the Shiv Sena party from Maharashtra. He wrote 40 poetry books in English and translated works from Bengali, Urdu, Punjabi, and Sanskrit. In the 1980s, he was the publications director of the Times of India group and the editor of several magazines.
He also held six exhibitions of his artworks. In 1993, he founded Pritish Nandy Communications Ltd. and People for Animals, India’s first animal rights NGO, now headed by Maneka Gandhi.

Family & Awards
His father’s name was Satish Chandra Nandy, and his mother’s name was Prafulla Nalini Nandy. His mother was a teacher at La Martiniere and later became the school’s first Indian vice principal.
He had two brothers, Ashis and Manish. He also had three children: his daughters Rangita (born in 1978) and Ishita (born in 1980), who work as filmmakers, composers, and showrunners, and his son Kushan (born in 1972), who is a filmmaker, writer, and director.
He received several prestigious awards throughout his career. In 1977, he was honored with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, by the President of India. In 2008, he was given the Karmaveer Puraskaar.
He also won the International Humanitarian Award at the Genesis Awards in Hollywood in 2012, organized by the Humane Society of the United States. Additionally, he received the Bangladesh Liberation War Award from the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Artist & Publishing Career
He has held six art exhibitions of his paintings, drawings, and calligraphy. His first show, Looking Within, was in 1990 and featured calligraphy and watercolors, held in Mumbai with artist Samir Mandal. The second show, Images:
The Poet and the Painter, was in 1991, featuring calligraphy and drawings with artist Manjit Bawa, first in New Delhi and then in Mumbai. The third was a solo exhibition called Drawings for My Children, shown in Mumbai and Calcutta in 1991, including a street play with Amitabh Bachchan and Anupam Kher.
After a gap of eight years, his next solo exhibition was Maverick: Poems of Love and Longing at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai in 1999.
The fifth show, Bored, was held at Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2008. His sixth exhibition in 2011 was organized in collaboration with artist Paresh Maity, showcasing calligraphy and watercolors based on Nandi’s translation of Rabindranath Tagore’s last poems ‘Shesha Lekha’.
Supported by the Government of India, the exhibition was displayed at several galleries including the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and Mumbai and CIMA in Calcutta.
Film and Television Career
In 1993, He founded Pritish Nandy Communications, where he is still the non-executive chairman and creative consultant.
The company’s first show was The Pritish Nandy Show, a chat show on India’s public broadcaster Doordarshan, and it became the first signature show on Indian TV. This was followed by Fiscal Fitness: The Pritish Nandy Business Show, India’s first weekly business show on Zee TV.
Nandy has hosted over 500 news and current affairs shows on Doordarshan, Zee TV, and Sony TV.
He has produced 24 films, which have received numerous awards and accolades. His company was a pioneer in introducing the multiplex film genre to India.
One of his company’s successful original series, Four More Shots Please! (available on Amazon Prime Video), received an International Emmy nomination in 2020 and has won several global awards. Amazon India’s creative head called it India’s most-watched show and the New York Times highlighted its impact.
