Former New Zealand cricketer Martin James Guptill, who was particularly known as an opener in limited-overs cricket, announced his retirement from international cricket on 8 January 2025. He retired from all three formats of the game at the age of 38.

Martin Guptill was born in Auckland in 1986. He first went to Kelston Primary and Kelston Boys’ High School, but later moved to Avondale College, where he played cricket and was a prefect. His wife is Laura McGoldrick, a journalist and reporter. His cousin Michael Guptill-Bunce also played cricket for Auckland.

Guptill has only two toes on his left foot. When he was 13, he had an accident with a forklift and lost three toes. Because of this, his teammates in the New Zealand cricket team call him “Two Toes”. He attended Kelston Boys’ High School for four years before moving to Avondale College in his final year of secondary school.

International Cricket Career

He first represented New Zealand in the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against the West Indies in Auckland on January 10, 2009.

In that match, he became the first New Zealander to score a century in his first ODI, scoring an unbeaten 122, the highest debut score for New Zealand, and the second-highest debut score in ODI history. He also became the first New Zealander to bat through a full ODI innings.

Guptill made his Test debut against India in March 2009, scoring 14 and 48. For his outstanding performances in 2009, he was named in the World ODI XI by the ICC.

In the 2011–12 season, Guptill won the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal and was named the T20 Player of the Year by New Zealand Cricket.

During New Zealand’s 2013 tour of England, Guptill scored two unbeaten centuries at Lord’s and Southampton, including an unbeaten 189, which was the highest score by a New Zealand player in ODIs at the time.

Guptill set a new record during the 2015 World Cup when he scored an unbeaten 237 off 163 balls against the West Indies in the quarter-finals. It was the first double-century in a World Cup knockout match.

In the IPL, Guptill played for three teams: Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab, and Mumbai Indians, for 3 years. He made his IPL debut in 2016 as a replacement for Lendl Simmons. Throughout his IPL career, he hit 24 fours and 15 sixes, with his highest score being an unbeaten 50.

In the 2019 IPL auction, Guptill was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 1 crore. However, ahead of the 2020 IPL auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad released him from the team.
