John Cook Biography

John G. Cook is an American volleyball coach who led the Nebraska Cornhuskers women’s volleyball team for 25 years, from 2000 to 2025. During his time as head coach, he built the program into one of the best in the country.

Under his leadership, Nebraska won four national championships (in 2000, 2006, 2015, and 2017) and dominated their conference, winning 15 titles.

Career Journey Of John 

After graduating, John returned to Francis Parker School, where he taught geography. While still coaching there, he also worked as the head assistant coach at UC San Diego in 1983 and 1984.

John became an assistant coach at Nebraska in 1989. In 1992, he took over as head coach at Wisconsin, becoming the program’s fifth full-time head coach. Three years later, he led the team to its second National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

He was named National Coach of the Year by the AVCA in 2000, 2005, and 2023. He’s also won conference Coach of the Year six times in both the Big 12 and Big Ten.

In 2008, he received the USA Volleyball All-Time Great Coach Award and was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in 2017.

He got his 800th career win in 2022 and is ranked twelfth for the most coaching wins in major college volleyball history. He’s also been named AVCA National Coach of the Year three times.
