Yoran began his career as one of the founding members of the US Department of Defense’s Computer Emergency Response Team. He later became the president and CEO of Tenable, Inc. on January 3, 2017. As of August 2023, he had been leading the company for over six years, focusing on helping organizations manage and mitigate cybersecurity risks.

Yorn was also a board member of the Center for Internet Security and was widely recognized as a leading expert in the cybersecurity industry.

In April 1998, during the dot-com boom, Amit Yoran co-founded Riptech with his two brothers and Tim Belcher. Riptech began operating in December 1999 and raised $45 million in funding. In 2002, the company was sold to Symantec for $145 million.

He also played a key role in U.S. cybersecurity efforts as the founding director of the US-CERT program at the Department of Homeland Security.

Before becoming CEO of Tenable, Yoran was the president of RSA, where he helped build the company into a successful global security leader. Earlier in his career, he founded and led NetWitness, a network forensics company that was later acquired by RSA.
