Career & Early Life

After graduating with a good degree, Alistair Appleton moved to Poland, where he wrote poetry, helped edit a children’s anthology, and taught at the University of Gdansk.

Later, he taught English in eastern Germany and worked as a translator and journalist for Deutsche Welle TV. His TV career started there when he became the host of the youth current affairs show Heat.

In 1999, Alistair returned to the UK and took on various TV roles. He appeared on Hot TV (2000), House Doctor (2000–03), Rhona (2000), Travel On (2001), Garden Invaders (2001), Cash in the Attic (2002–05), and Stately Suppers (2005).

He even played himself in the Doctor Who episode “Army of Ghosts” (2006). He also hosted The Proms and other TV specials.

Alistair did some acting too, including a role in Footballers’ Wives in 2002. In 2005, he made a short documentary called The Man Who Drank the Universe, about ayahuasca, a traditional Amazonian plant brew.

Since 2007, he has been a presenter on BBC’s Escape to the Country and hosted The Night Shift, a concert series by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in London.

In 2016, he appeared on Celebrity Mastermind, finishing second with his chosen topic of 20th-century European classical music.

Outside of TV, Alistair works as a psychotherapist in Brighton and teaches meditation. He completed a master’s degree in Advanced Psychotherapy in 2014.
