International career

In April 2015, Mitchell Santner was selected for New Zealand’s limited-overs team for the tour of England. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut on June 9, 2015, taking his first international wicket by dismissing Sam Billings.

During the fourth ODI of the series, he hit 28 runs off one over from Adil Rashid, the second-highest runs in a single over in England’s ODI history. He also made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut on June 23, 2015.

Santner made history on November 27, 2015, when he played his first Test match against Australia, becoming the first cricketer to debut in a day/night Test. He started his Test career with a boundary off the very first ball he faced.

In the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, Santner was one of New Zealand’s main spin bowlers. In the opening match against India, he won the Player of the Match award for his outstanding bowling, taking 4 wickets for 11 runs, the best figures by a New Zealand spinner in the tournament’s history. In January 2018, Santner introduced a carrom ball to his bowling, successfully dismissing Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman with it. However, a knee injury in March 2018 ruled him out of cricket for several months, forcing him to miss the IPL and an English county stint. He returned to international cricket in January 2019 and participated in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he played an important role for New Zealand.

In November 2019, Santner scored his first Test century against England and formed a record 261-run partnership with BJ Watling for the seventh wicket. In the same match, he became the first New Zealand spinner in over a year to take a wicket on home soil.

In November 2020, Santner captained New Zealand for the first time in a T20 match against the West Indies. He later captained the team in an ODI against Scotland in 2022, becoming New Zealand’s 24th ODI captain. In the 2023 Cricket World Cup, he became the first New Zealand spinner to take a five-wicket haul in a World Cup match during a game against the Netherlands.

Santner achieved more success in October 2024, when New Zealand won a Test series in India for the first time. He played a key role with remarkable bowling figures of 7/53 and 6/104 in the second Test.

In December 2024, at the age of 32, he was named New Zealand’s new captain for ODI and T20 cricket, succeeding Kane Williamson. His captaincy began with matches against Sri Lanka, while Tom Latham continued as Test captain.

While playing for CSK, Santner once hit a six on the last ball of the match to secure a win against the Rajasthan Royals. In the 2022 mega auction, CSK bought him again.

In February 2022, he was officially signed by CSK for that year’s IPL tournament. After winning the IPL with CSK in 2023, Santner joined their sister team, the Texas Super Kings, to play in the first season of Major League Cricket in the USA.
