V. Narayanan is an Indian aerospace engineer and rocket expert. He is the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Thiruvananthapuram.
He has recently been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Dr V Narayanan was born in Melakattu village near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District in 1964. He is 60 years old as of 2024. He was born to India Parents, his father’s name is Mr. Narayanan.
Dr. V. Narayanan has been chosen as the next Chairman of ISRO and Secretary of the Department of Space. He will take over from S. Somnath, who has been leading ISRO since January 2022, on January 14, 2025.

Dr. V. Narayanan studied at IIT Kharagpur and has a PhD in Aerospace Engineering. He earned a silver medal for topping his M.Tech class at IIT Kharagpur and a gold medal from the Astronautical Society of India (ASI).
He has won several awards, including the ASI Award for Rocket Technologies, ISRO’s Outstanding Achievement and Performance Excellence Awards, and Team Excellence Awards.
He also received an honorary Doctorate of Science from Sathyabama University, Chennai. In 2018, he was honored with IIT Kharagpur’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
In 2019, he won the National Design Award and the National Aeronautical Prize from the Aeronautical Society of India.

Career Journey Of Dr. V. Narayanan
Narayanan joined ISRO in 1984 and has worked in many important roles within the organization. He became a well-known expert in rocket and spacecraft propulsion.
Early in his career, he worked on Solid Propulsion, contributing to Sounding Rockets and launch vehicles like the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
Narayanan completed his M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering from IIT-Kharagpur in 1989, where he ranked first.
He then worked at LPSC in the Cryogenic Propulsion area, playing a key role in developing cryogenic propulsion stages for ISRO’s GSLV rockets, including the GSLV Mk-II and GSLV Mk-III.
He led the development of the Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) for GSLV Mk-II, boosting India’s self-reliance in high-performance cryogenic systems.
Dr. Narayanan and his team provided the propulsion systems for India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission, and he also played a key role in the development and testing of systems for Chandrayaan-3.
He is an important part of the Gaganyaan program, working on making cryogenic stages safe for human missions and developing propulsion modules for the crew and service modules.
Dr. Narayanan has written more than 1,200 internal reports, 50 research papers for journals and conferences, and several chapters for books.
