Monali Thakur was born on 3 November 1985 in Kolkata, India to a Bengali family. Her father Shakti Thakur was a renowned Bengali artist and her elder sister Mehuli Thakur is also an artist.
She completed her schooling at The Future Foundation School and later earned an honors degree in English from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Despite focusing on her academics, Monali was passionate about music and dreamed of becoming a playback singer since the age of 14.
Pandit Ajay Chakraborty and Pandit Jagdish Prasad trained Monali in classical Hindustani music. Apart from music, she also learned various dance styles including salsa, hip-hop, and Bharatnatyam.
