She completed her schooling at The Future Foundation School and later earned an honors degree in English from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Despite focusing on her academics, Monali was passionate about music and dreamed of becoming a playback singer since the age of 14.
Pandit Ajay Chakraborty and Pandit Jagdish Prasad trained Monali in classical Hindustani music. Apart from music, she also learned various dance styles including salsa, hip-hop, and Bharatnatyam.

Monali Thakur started her professional singing career in 2005 by participating in Indian Idol 2. Although she finished ninth, her talent was well appreciated by judges Anu Malik, Sonu Nigam, and Farah Khan. The show made her a household name and Anu Malik gave her her first break as a playback singer in the Bollywood film Jaan-E-Mann.
