Mahua Moitra was born on 12 October 1974 in Labak in the Cachar district of Assam. Her father’s name is Dwipendra Lal Moitra and she comes from a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family. She also has a sister.
She studied at Gokhale Memorial Girls’ School in Kolkata. In 1998, she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, USA. Mahua Moitra completed her degree magna cum laude, which is a symbol of high academic achievement.
