Vikram Misri has been appointed Deputy National Security Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat. Until recently, he was serving as India’s Ambassador to China.

He also met key Bangladesh officials, including Interim Government Adviser Engineer Mohammad Yunus, Foreign Affairs Adviser Engineer Mohammad Tauhid Hussain, and his Bangladeshi counterpart from the Organization Group.

Vikram Misri was born on 7 November 1964 in Srinagar, India. He belongs to a Kashmiri Hindu family. He studied in schools in Srinagar, Udhampur, and Gwalior, including the Scindia School.

He received a bachelor’s degree in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi and later did an MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur. He is married to Dolly Misri and has two children. Misri is fluent in Hindi, English, and Kashmiri and also has a good knowledge of French.

Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has had a distinguished career as a diplomat, serving in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. He also served in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Prime Minister’s Office.

Notably, he served as private secretary to three Indian Prime Ministers: I.K. Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi. Before joining the government, he worked in the private sector in advertising and film production for three years.

Misri was India’s ambassador to China from 2019 to 2021 and later held the post of Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA). Now he has been appointed Foreign Secretary.

Apart from this, he is also a fellow of the India Leadership Initiative of the Aspen Institute USA, now called the Kamalnayan Bajaj Fellowship.

Vikram Misri on Monday became India’s new Foreign Secretary, replacing Vinay Kwatra. Kwatra is expected to be appointed India’s ambassador to the United States, a post that has been vacant since Taranjit Sandhu retired in January.

Misri will serve as foreign secretary for at least two years as per normal rules. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) welcomed him and wished him a successful tenure. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also congratulated Misri and wished him a successful and productive tenure.
