Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, popularly known as S.M. Krishna, was born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli village in Maddur taluk of Mandya district in Karnataka. He belonged to a Vokkaliga family and was the son of S.C. Mallaiah.
Krishna completed high school at Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala in Mysore and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Maharaja College, Mysore. He then studied law, earning a degree from the University Law College (formerly Government Law College) in Bangalore.
Later, he moved to the United States and earned a master’s degree in law from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
After returning to India, he entered politics and was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1962. Krishna was married to Prema and had two daughters. One of his daughters Malavika Krishna was married to Cafe Coffee Day founder and businessman late V.G. Siddhartha.
He also had a younger brother Shankar, who died in 2019 and was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council. Krishna died at his home in Bengaluru on December 10, 2024, at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness.
His last rites will be performed on December 11, 2024, in his hometown Mandya, as per Vokkaliga traditions and with full state honors. The Karnataka government has announced a three-day mourning in his honor.
