Soumya Sarkar was born in Satkhira, Khulna, into a Bengali Hindu family. His full name was originally Soumya Shanto, but later “Shanto” was removed from his name. He was born on 25 February 1993 in Satkhira, Bangladesh. He is 31 years old as of 2024.

Sarkar is the only player to hit two sixes in the first over of a T20 World Cup match. He also holds the record for scoring the second-highest individual runs for Bangladesh in a One Day International (ODI) match.

Domestic Career 

Sarkar is a top-order batter who played in the Under-19 World Cups in 2010 and 2012. During the 2012 tournament, he gained attention for dismissing Australia’s Jimmy Peirson through “mankading.” He made his first-class cricket debut for Khulna Division against Dhaka Division in the 2010–11 season.

In April 2019, during the last matches of the 2018–19 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, Soumya Sarkar scored an unbeaten 208 runs while playing for Abahani Limited against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club. His incredible performance helped Abahani Limited win their 20th Dhaka Premier League title.

BPL – Bangladesh Premier League 

In October 2018, Soumya Sarkar joined the Rajshahi Kings for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). In November 2019, he was picked to play for the Cumilla Warriors in the 2019–20 BPL.

On December 28, 2019, he scored 88 not out against the Rajshahi Royals, his highest score in T20 cricket and his first half-century in T20s in four years. Sarkar played for Gazi Group Chattogram in the 2020-21 Bangabandhu T20 Cup.

International Career  

Soumya Sarkar was part of Bangladesh’s squad for their home series against Zimbabwe in 2014. He made his debut in One Day International (ODI) cricket for Bangladesh on December 1, 2014, in a match against Zimbabwe.

He played for Bangladesh in the 2015 Cricket World Cup. He shares the record with Mohammad Kaif and Umar Akmal for taking the most catches in a single World Cup match (4).

In April 2015, Sarkar made his debut in both Twenty20 Internationals and Tests for Bangladesh, playing against Pakistan.

On April 22, 2015, he scored his first ODI century and partnered with Tamim Iqbal to add 145 runs together. In July 2021, He was selected for Bangladesh’s T20I squad against Zimbabwe.

During the first T20I match, he scored his 1000th run in T20I cricket, becoming the fifth Bangladeshi batsman to reach this milestone. In September 2021, Soumya Sarkar was named in Bangladesh’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

He was also selected to play in the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. On April 15, 2024, during the second ODI against Sri Lanka, he became the fastest Bangladeshi batter to score 2,000 runs in ODIs, reaching the milestone in just 64 innings.
