Tilak Varma Biography

Tilak Varma is an Indian cricketer who bats left-handed and also bowls off-spin occasionally. He made his debut for the Indian national team on August 3, 2023, in a T20I match against the West Indies. He also plays for the Mumbai team in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Tilak Varma was born on November 8, 2002, in Hyderabad to a Telugu family. He has brown eyes, black hair, and stands 5 feet 11 inches tall.

Tilak became interested in cricket at a young age and was discovered by coach Salim Bayash while playing tennis ball cricket when he was 11.

Bayash took him under his guidance and trained him at the Legala Cricket Academy in Lingampally.

For a while, Bayash would drive Tilak more than 40 kilometers (25 miles) each way on his scooter until Tilak’s family moved closer to the academy.

Tilak Varma’s father, Namboodiri Nagaru, is an electrician, and his mother, Gayatri Devi, is a homemaker. He has an older brother named Tarun Verma. He is unmarried and still single.

Education & Early Life

Tilak Varma attended Crescent Model English School and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School in Hyderabad for his early education.

He completed his secondary schooling at Lepakshi Junior College, Hyderabad, and is currently studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Andhra University.

Tilak developed an early interest in sports and joined the Leela Cricket Academy in Telangana to train in cricket under mentor Salam Bayash.

He made his debut in first-class cricket for Hyderabad during the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, scoring 215 runs in seven matches. He also made his Twenty20 debut for Hyderabad in the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

His List A debut was in the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 180 runs in five matches and took four wickets.

In December 2019, Tilak was selected for India’s squad in the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he played six matches and scored 86 runs. In the 2021–22 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 180 runs in five matches and took four wickets.

Internation & IPL Career

In February 2022, Tilak Varma was bought by Mumbai Indians for ₹1.7 crore in the IPL auction, with a base price of ₹20 lakh. In his second match of the tournament, he scored 61 runs from 33 balls against Rajasthan Royals at Dubai Stadium.

In April 2023, Tilak scored 84 runs from 46 balls in his first match of the 2023 IPL against Royal Challengers Bangalore. In a playoff match against Gujarat Titans, he scored 43 runs in just 14 balls.

Tilak got his first call-up to the Indian cricket team for the T20I series against West Indies in July 2023. He made his T20I debut on August 3, 2023, scoring 39 runs off 22 balls and taking 2 catches.

On August 6, 2023, he became the second-youngest Indian to score a half-century in men’s T20Is, after Rohit Sharma. He finished the series as the highest run-scorer.

He was also selected for the Indian squad for the T20I tour of Ireland and the 2022 Asian Games in China. Tilak made his ODI debut for India against Bangladesh on September 15, 2023, in the 2023 Asia Cup.

On November 13, 2024, Tilak scored his first T20I century, making 107 not out of 56 balls against South Africa, becoming the youngest player to score a T20I century against a top 10 nation.

On November 15, 2024, he scored another century, 120 off just 47 balls, becoming the second Indian to score two consecutive T20I centuries and the first to remain unbeaten on both occasions.

On January 25, 2025, in a T20 match against England, Tilak scored 72 runs from 55 balls, leading his team to victory and helping them win the match.
