Eknath Shinde was born on February 9, 1964, in a Maratha family in Satara, Maharashtra. His family later moved to Thane for better opportunities when he was young.
His father’s name is Sambhaji Nadlu Shinde.
Eknath studied up to the 11th grade at Mangala High School and Junior College in Thane but couldn’t continue further education due to financial problems.
After dropping out, he started driving an auto rickshaw while living in the Wagle Estate area. During this time, he met Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe, who became his mentor and guided him into politics.
Inspired by Dighe, Shinde joined Shiv Sena as a regular party worker at the age of 18.
Years later, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marathi and Political Science from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University.
Political Timeline of Eknath Shinde
He worked with full dedication as a Shiv Sena worker. In the 1997 Thane Municipal Corporation elections, his mentor, Anand Dighe, gave him a ticket to contest as a councilor, and Shinde won.
In 2001, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation and was re-elected as a councilor in 2002. After Anand Dighe’s death in 2001, Shinde’s influence grew in Shiv Sena and Thane politics.
His position in the party became stronger, especially after Narayan Rane left in 2005 and Raj Thackeray split from Shiv Sena, bringing Shinde closer to the Thackeray family.
In the 2004 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Shiv Sena gave Shinde a ticket for the Thane seat, which he won by defeating Congress’s Manoj Shinde by over 37,000 votes.
He continued to win elections, representing the Kopri-Pachpakhadi seat in 2009, 2014, and 2019. During the Devendra Fadnavis government, Shinde served as the Public Works Minister.
On June 30, 2022, Shinde became the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra after leading a rebellion within Shiv Sena, which caused the Maha Vikas Aghadi government to fall. He joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form a new government.
